John Giles

(born c. 1730 - died 1828)

Local connection

Lived locally and signed the Lee Petition of 1814.

Biography

John was a churchwarden at Lee (1802, 1810 – 11, 1815 - 1820) and he lived at Lee Park Farm (1814).

He signed the 1814 Lee Petition against the slave trade.

There is a monumental inscription at St Mary’s, Lewisham to his wife and children that reads:

'in memory of Elizabeth the virtuous and truly affectionate wife of John Giles. She departed this life July 16 1785 in the 35 year of her age. Also four children issue of the above. Viz John Frederic died August 5 1781 aged 18 days Thomas Hollier died July 31 1783 aged 3 years 2 months John died August 6 1783 aged 10 months Fanny Anna died December 20 1787 aged 4 years 1 month'.

He was buried at St Margaret's, Lee 24 July 1828 aged 98. His will describes him as gentleman of Lee.
